New London Ledge Light
New London, CT 6320
This lighthouse dates back to 1909 and is home to the legend of Ernie, a lightkeeper whose spirits reportedly lingers the grounds, making knocking sounds at night, opening and closing doors, taking sheets off beds and turning TVs on and off. Legend says that Ernie killed himself after finding out about his wife's affair. He cut his throat and jumped off the upper level of the lighthouse. A TV reporter once stayed the night here in the 1990s and heard loud whispering noises all throughout the night. It was featured on TV's Scariest Places on Earth and on TV's Ghost Hunters.

It was a brisk summer day , when I visited the lighthouse. I always loved this lighthouse from afar, was very happy to be able to go on a trip that would raise money for it's upkeep. Once inside you could feel it's history. I was able to go to the very top , the view was stunning ! They say there was a storm that blew through the lighthouse,Ernie and one other man spent 3 days up top with the light,as the storm raged through the lighthouse. Ernie survived only to take his life later on. They said he was broken hearted after his beloved left him for another. There might be another reason. Back in his day , mercury was used to aide the function of the light. With what we know now about the effects of mercury to the body & the mind, poor Ernie might have had mercury poisoning . You can definetely feel his spirit here, as you step foot inside. One of my favorite places I've ever been. It's like stepping back in time. A New England treasure, a must see to believe.
