Mary Hart died in 1872 and was buried in Evergreen Cemetery. The mystery that surrounds her involves the message, which some believe to contain a curse, on her pink granite tombstone:

AT HIGH NOON JUST FROM, AND ABOUT TO RENEW HER DAILY WORK, IN HER FULL STRENGTH OF BODY AND MIND MARY E. HART HAVING FALLEN PROSTRATE: REMAINED UNCONSCIOUS, UNTIL SHE DIED AT MIDNIGHT, OCTOBER 15, 1872 BORN DECEMBER 16, 1824 And across the top: THE PEOPLE SHALL BE TROUBLED AT MIDNIGHT AND PASS AWAY.

But this last quote, taken by many as a curse, is actually from the Bible, Job 34:20: “In a moment shall they die, and the people shall be troubled at midnight, and pass away: and the mighty shall be taken away without hand.”

Some local tales say Mary was accidentally buried alive, and was later dug up to reveal bloodied nails showing she had tried to free herself before suffocating to death. Others say she became a ghost hitchhiker after her death, and yet others say that she was a witch in life and those who visit the grave at midnight will come face to face with her ghost.
